10/1 Playstation Store Update: The PSPocalypse Has Begun
Today is October 1st, and you know what that means. The PSPgo has launched, and surprisingly, with it Sony has seen fit to update the PS Store not just early, but with a sweeping swath of new downloadable games. What made the list?
Leading the downloadable revolution is Gran Turismo Portable, freshly released at retail this morning. Along with it comes a large selection of SCEA’s older PSP titles, including Daxter, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Resistance Retribution, and more. EA has stepped up to deliver a massive selection of their titles, from the obvious Madden 10 to older titles including Def Jam, Burnout, and several Need for Speed titles. Atlus and Nippon Ichi have also answered the PSPgo’s siren call of digital download superiority, offering titles like Disgaea, Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?, Persona, and more. Over 80 new and old games were added when the Playstation Store updated at a surprisingly early hour this morning, with a large mix of action, RPG, sports, and racing titles; needless to say, there’ll probably be at least one game on the list that tickles your fancy.
In fact, the only people who won’t be well-served by today’s mammoth PSP update are, ironically, fans of the franchises that got the PSP where it is today. Notably missing from the list are all of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and Star Ocean titles (not counting the PS1 Classics versions of VII and Tactics), Konami’s portable Metal Gear installments, and Capcom’s Mega Man remakes. Why these publishers saw fit to hold back the downloadable releases of such hits as Crisis Core, MGS: Portable Ops, and Dissidia is beyond my comprehension, but provided sales on the Store pick up, PSPgo owners should have no trouble finding their Final Fantasy fix soon enough.
Today also saw the launch of the PSP Minis platform, with a number of smaller titles, including Tetris, Hero of Sparta, and Fieldrunners joining the downloadable lineup. Square Enix’s retro remake Thexder NEO and Q Games’ Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe also hit the Store, though both titles are classified as full PSN titles.
So, readers; anybody picked up a PSPgo yet? Have those of you with old-model PSPs taken advantage of the increased convenience of the expanded digital distribution model? Let us know!

My coworker sold his PSP and 1 game for $150 and upgraded to the Go. It’s actually a pretty nice piece of hardware. Feels a lot more sturdy than the slim, and it fits in your hand really well. The shoulder buttons feel especially good. The DLC only angle definitely is a negative for those who already have a PSP collection, but if you are just getting one, aside from the price, I thought it was pretty cool.
