The Minigames and Touchscreen Features of GTA: Chinatown Wars

Over the past few weeks, Rockstar  Games has released a number of trailers featuring the touch screen centric minigames that they’ve included in upcoming DS release Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. We’ve gathered them for your benefit.

Hotwiring, Carjacking, & Peeling Out

Hacking & Sniper Rifle

Dealing & Delivering

The more stylus focused gameplay looks a bit gimmicky , but certainly makes use of the touch screen in unique ways. The economics driven drug dealing system seems like it has some depth to it, though, and should make for hours of side-mission fun. The most interesting part of these videos for me though is how these features are framed by normal gameplay. Rockstar knows that they have to convince us that the “GTA experience” can be replicated on the DS, and that these features add to it instead of make up for any shortcomings with regards to the hardware. Between the videos released so far, and my time playing it a few weeks back at New York Comic Con, Chinatown Wars is high on my “do-want” list. We’ll see if it lives up to expectations when it releases on March 17.
