Left 4 Dead Survival Mode Hates You, Loves Cheaters?
I’ve been attempting to play the new Left 4 Dead ‘Survival’ mode, and well it looks like I either suck, or the new mode hates me…
I don’t know if it’s because neither myself, or my friends, can handle three ‘Tanks’ at the same time or if it’s the endless horde. There is just no way of surviving past 10 minutes easily because as soon as you hit the four minute mark the game erupts in a giant volcano of Horde, Tanks, Boomers, Smokers and Hunters all at the same time. And with an improved Boomer that will completely blind you for a few seconds you will find it harder than ever to stay alive, whereas you could at least defend yourself from the horde before the update.
The melee fatigue really doesn’t help in the new mode either, it’s just annoying. When you melee around a few times a little meter will appear on screen and you can’t melee until that meter is gone again. Not only that, the AI seems horribly broken since the update. We even went through one round where all Zoey did was jump up and down on top of the new lighthouse.
If you look at the leaderboards for survival mode then you can see that someone, somehow, has been able to last just over 150 minutes! I’m not a bad Left 4 Dead player, I’m really not, and I can’t see myself lasting more than 15 minutes tops in this – so how can this one guy get to 150 on his own? Clearly there is either a single, or a bunch of exploits since the few after him has been able to last just over 82 minutes and there were three of them. I can’t even last 2 minutes with the new horrible AI on my side.
Right now Left 4 Dead is also suffering major server issues, lots of people are complaining about being kicked out of games. Not sure if that’s a horde of new, as well as returning, players putting strain on the servers but it’s too bad that what was supposed to be a great update brought a lot of horrors with it.
So, basically, because you don’t see how anybody could be that much better than you, they have to be cheating? That’s a little egocentric, don’t you think?
@Maldron – If you play it you would find that Simon is telling you the truth. There has to be some exploit that needs patched cause even McWhertor on Kotaku commented that it was just too damn hard!
Someone probably found some place to perch that none of the zombies can reach. Considering you have all the time in the world to use the physical objects on a map to build a staircase, that 150 minute person probably built one off the map and just let the game run. As for the 82 minute folks, they probably did the same exact thing.
However, I do think that 10 minutes is achievable with a group of 4 people who know each other and have planned out a strategy. I think survival IS too difficult for single player, but for 4 people who have planned out their actions, I think 15 minutes is attainable. Think of this mode as a new final boss from WoW that needs the raid of 4 to figure out how to kill it… 16 times over (since there are 16 different maps for it.)
It’s one thing to survive for 150 minutes with a good team of zombie killers, it’s a whole different thing to stay alive for that long with an AI that ignores the zombies and you half the time.
@Shaun McIlroy – I watched it be played in my room, I’ve watched it be played on youtube for groups that hit the ten minute mark. They could’ve gone on indefinitely, were they not merely human. And in that 11 minutes, they had exactly 11 tanks. The last one cleaned them out. Me, I’d sense a pattern to their spawning.
But my big deal is the fact that he said “I don’t see how anybody could make it past fifteen minutes.” What is he basing that ceiling on, exactly? The short of it is, he doesn’t see how anybody could make it past a certain point, and immediately assumed an exploit. He’s probably right, but to close himself to the possibility that people can play the game that much better than his expectations irritates me.
As far as I understood from the update notes, you’re not supposed to survive beyond 10mins: “Our goals for Survival Mode are to deliver a mode of play distinct from Campaign or Versus, have games that regularly last under ten minutes, and emphasize competition with team play through leaderboards.”
You’re supposed to have a mad burst of gameplay that is over within 10mins and just have mad, chaotic BUT quick fun.

Check the leader boards for No Mercy- Roof top finale. No way in hell anyone can last 10 hours! (600+min)
There is a glitch/expoit in their somewhere.
Someone has 1370+ mins on the 360 on Crane… -_-
I was able to make it 11 min 37 sec with a team of four. Eventually, the horde waves came too fast and the special infected to hard to beat. No cheating done for this time. We then tried for a glitch. We went for 46 min 44 sec on Crane. I do not generally promote cheating/glitching. However, this was insanely fun. We were basically able to get out of the boundaries of the map. The horde could still get to us, but the tanks could not. This made it loads easier. We were also able to get in the building with the open window. The entire horde comes out that way and we did not last long.
Just an FYI the leaderboards now display times well over 1000 Minutes on some levels. they are definatly exploiting map defects… I don’t know that I have a problem with this because I could care less about the leaderboards I am more interested in besting my own records… so far a meassly 7 minutes on light house… I have a ways to go.
Well I personally hate the exploits seeing as how the survival mode was made to, I dont know, SURVIVE!
Even without those exploits Me and my team got 14:34 At the hospital/Elavator level.
We wanted to continue but grew tired of the level so we decided to play on versus and test our teamwork there.
i found survival to be extremely hard at first, and that really surprised me because ive done so many expert runs that i thought i could handle this , but , its too chaotic . It doesnt give you time to think once you pushed the button for the horde to come. Sometimes youll get a break for 10 seconds. But in between that time a tank comes and the horde follows a few seconds after so basicely your screwed unless you got a good team that knows how to take care of themselves. But valve really dissapointed me with this mode. I thought you could barricade alittle, move the equipment but you cant, and this really ruins the whole idea of survival. You cannot survive past the 5 min with a pug team. its just impossible. 1 guy gets pulled by a smoker out of nowhere because he felt he needed to get a canister and then the whole team goes after him and then they get vomited on and pounced on and so your fucked. there is no fun to it, its frustrating and boring. oh and wow, 2 more versus maps, yay…..worst dlc ever

Considering the fact that all you have to do in one level is hide on a box on the wall and the horde just runs away and ignores you is kinda shitty ( 4000 Min is the best on that one BTW )

Ok I bet a lot of you are now thinking What a DUMB A$$ ,you were for thinking and supporting the fact that there was someone able to last 150 min. Your full of it if you think that was ever possible. THEY were flat out cheating.Taking advantage of the glitch.

the only good thing about using glitches on survival mode is to get your kill count up for the zombie genocide achivement
if uve got 2 glitch, cheat or mod games 2 win then u relli have no life
I saw people cheat on my team, helping each other up a roof which was outside the map.
