Square Enix Counts Down To…Something

Publishers love countdowns.  Love ‘em.  And with the exception of perhaps Kojima Productions, no publisher loves countdown timers more than Square Enix, which has started the Speculatron up all over again with a new countdown website.

We don’t know too much about it, except that it’s counting down 238 hours, which happens to end on July 6th…a date which offers absolutely no significance at this point in time.  The art in the background resembles that of a Dragon Quest, Mana, or SaGa game, and a rather large “4″ is displayed prominently on the page.  There’s also some very faint music in the background; it’s not enough to provide hints, though.

Through the process of elimination, though, we can deduce what this announcement is likely notDragon Quest IV has already been ported to the DS, so it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing it again.  The Mana series is currently dead, but notably, Dawn of Mana was referred to as Seiken Densetsu IV in Japan, so a Mana revival is also unlikely.  The Romancing SaGa franchise ended at 3, but its last iteration was all the way back on the SNES.  It’s a possibility, but no more likely than anything else.  The last possible clue comes from a trademark filed by Square Enix several weeks ago for a title called “Four Warriors of Light”.  The existances of both Nier and Front Mission Evolved were leaked initially through Japanese trademark filings, so could we have had yet another Square Enix announcement spoiled by the publisher?  Tune in on July 6th and we’ll find out together.
